How to Seal the Grout at a Shower

Shower grout is merely a mixture of sand, cement and water; so it’s naturally absorbent and porous. Left unsealed, it may soak up dirt and mildew such as a sponge and once it’s in… it may be time consuming to escape. You can seal the grout readily without breaking the bank. Sealer is available in either water- or solvent-based. Sealing your grout at least once a year will help to keep mold and mold.

Permit fresh grout to cure for 48 to 72 hours before applying sealer.

Ventilate the room and wear rubber cleaning gloves. Dip a coarse scrub pad into a bucket of fresh water. Scrub every grout line with all the moist pad to remove loose grout and debris. Wipe up the debris and water using a towel or a large sponge. Allow the grout to dry for the total amount of time recommended by the sealer manufacturer, as drying times vary among products.

Pour the sealer into an applicator bottle. Fill the jar completely to the top. Place the roller-wheel top on the jar and tighten it securely.

Turn the applicator bottle upside down, so the roller-wheel points toward the floor.

Roll the wheel down the middle of the grout line and saturate it completely with sealer. Work in small sections and use sterile paper towels to remove excess dyes from the surface of the tile. Drying sealer can render a dull, hazy film on the surface of tile. Permit the sealer to dry for the total amount of time recommended by the manufacturer, normally 5 to 10 minutes. Eliminate standing sealer in the grout lines completely, using dry paper towels.

Move to the upcoming small section of grout line and use the sealer. Permit the sealer to dry for the same period of time and remove excess from surrounding tiles using dry paper towels. Continue in this fashion until every grout line was sealed. Permit the sealer to dry for the full period of time recommended by the manufacturer.

Use the same procedure to apply another coat of sealer to the grout. Permit the sealer to dry completely. Numerous coats of sealer may be applied until you reach the desired coverage. The shower was sealed adequately when water on the surface of the grout, unable to penetrate.

Permit the sealer to cure for the full period of time recommended by the manufacturer before using the shower.
