THE WORKBENCH: A COMPLETE GUIDE
TO CREATING YOUR PERFECT BENCH, by
Lon Schleining, is a resource for designing and building the right bench for safe and effective woodworking. Chapters cover ideas on making various workbench tops and bases, along with vise and component installment. Also
included are discussions on traditional versus modern benches, and benches for special tasks. The author states that a simple bench can still be the basis for creating museum-quality work and points to Sam Maloof’s workbench as an example. Built more like a table than a workbench, Maloof’s is lower, wider and longer than typical benches at 31-1/4" high, 38-1/2" wide, and 84" long. The maple top is 2-1/2" thick, with nothing more than a patternmaker’s vice at one end. A special profile on making a Mal-oof-style bench is included, along with
dozens of other plans in a summarized — versus step-by-step — style. The 202- page hardcover sells for $34.95. Contact: Taunton Press, 63 S. Main St., P.O. Box 5506, Newtown, CT 06470-5506. Tel: 800-888-8286. www.taunton.com
POCKET SHOP REFERENCE, by Tom Begnal, offers volumes of general shop information in a compact book. Its tips are straightforward, helping woodworkers simplify and quicken their tasks. It covers adhesives, fasteners, finishing, furniture design, sharpening, suppliers, tools and
wood. Workshop math solutions are also offered, including geometry equations, math conversion tables, and standard furniture dimensions. Each section is broken down dynamically. The adhesives section, for example, lists the bonding ability of common wood species, and then dis-cusses tips on surface preparation. Begnal was the managing editor of Woodworker’s Journal for over 15 years. The 240-page hardcover sells for $14.99. Contact: Popular Woodworking Books, F&W Publica- tions Inc., 4700 E. ULTIMATE GUIDE TO FURNITURE RE-
PAIR AND REFINISHING, by Brian D. Hingley, is a guide to restoring, rebuilding and renewing furniture with detailed sections that cover repairing joints, reviving old finishes, repairing surface damage and refinishing. There are more than 500 step-by-step color photographs and detailed drawings. Of interest is the section on structural repairs and loose joints, among the first problems you will likely encounter as you begin to repair furniture. Hingley has been a professional furniture refinisher for more than
20 years and is the owner of
Hingley Furniture Restoration Inc. in Richmond, Va. He uses his acquired expertise in “The Pros Know,” special sections featured throughout the book. Through a first-person approach, he explains negative encounters he’s experienced throughout his career, and makes suggestions so readers can be spared. One example is fixing a broken mortise-and-tenon joint. Hingley suggests cutting off the broken tenon flush with the wood surface, using a chisel to remove old glue and broken tenon pieces, and cutting a wooden plug to fit the mortise. The 240-page softcover sells for $19.95. Contact: Creative Homeowner, P.O. Box 38, Upper Saddle River, NJ 07458. Tel: 800-631- 7795. www.creativehomeowner.com
