Powermatic simplifies drill press speed control

A sliding lever allows the user to adjust the rpm on the new PM2800 model with one hand

Powermatic’s new stand-alone drill press, model PM2800, offers a number of unique features, such as a single-handle speed changer, digital speed read-out and 1-hp motor.

“It’s a drill press designed with the features a woodworker needs, which is for the most part, currently not available in the market,” said John Otto, product manager for WMH Tool Group, parent company of the Powermatic brand.

The single-handle speed changer allows the user to run the machine’s full range of speeds without removing the drive-belt cover, loosening the motor and belt, and then physically moving the belt, as with most other drill presses, Otto said.

“This is just the movement of one lever. You don’t have to open the cover to go anywhere from 400 to

3,000 rpm,” he said.

Spindle speed is registered on a front digital display. “Our display reads right off the spindle, so you know exactly what you’re turning,” said Otto. “And that’s important to know so you can properly match the size of the drill bit to the appropriate spindle speed.”

The PM2800 features a 1-hp, fully en-

closed, fan-cooled motor and a head-mounted dual laser guide system, which — once properly aligned — provides a consistent drilling cross point, Otto said.

The drill press weighs 287 lbs. and has a 16" x 14" table, which can be extended to 16" x 26" and tilted to 90 degrees. There’s a lighted push-button

power switch with a safety key, two miter slots, and adjustable split fence with a dust collection port.

The PM2800, which retails for $799, also offers a 5/8" keyless chuck and two LED work lights.
